Creedal Theology: More Than Just Ancient Christian Karaoke

Ever wondered why Christians throughout history have been so fond of reciting creeds together? It's not just because they needed something to do between hymns! Creedal (or Dogmatic) Theology represents one of the categories of theological study, and it can be as foundational as your morning coffee ritual.

The Ancient Playlist: Why Creeds Matter

Paul provided one of the earliest creedal statements in 1 Corinthians 15:3-4.

3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures

Take the Apostles’ Creed, for instance. It’s not just a greatest hits compilation of Christian beliefs – it’s a carefully crafted statement covering everything from God the Father as Creator to the final judgment. Think of it as the original Christian Twitter thread, but with way more substance and staying power.

Benefits of Creedal Theology

until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, 14 so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes.

The Modern Application

In our current “design-your-own-spirituality” culture, creeds remind us that some truths are non-negotiable. While America tends to celebrate individualism, which has its merits, creedal theology reminds us that we’re part of a larger faith community spanning centuries.

Beloved, although I was very eager to write to you about our common salvation, I found it necessary to write appealing to you to contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints.

Finding Balance

Just like you wouldn’t trust a cookbook that says “add whatever feels right” for every recipe, we need these established guidelines. However, creeds should always be tested against Scripture (Acts 17:11), our ultimate authority. After all, we’re aiming for “plain to the understanding” theology and creeds are written by men…not inspired. Scripture is inspired…and that’s something worth standing up and reciting about!

16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.
