The landscape of theological discourse has shifted dramatically in recent decades, requiring us to carefully consider how we present biblical truth in our current context. Let’s examine the key differences between modern and postmodern approaches to theology and how we can effectively communicate truth in today’s world.
The Modern Mindset
The modern era was characterized by an overly optimistic worldview that placed ultimate confidence in human reason and scientific progress. This approach to theology often emphasized:
- Absolute certainty in knowledge
- Systematic categorization of truth
- Heavy reliance on rational argumentation
- Confidence in human ability to fully comprehend truth
The Postmodern Challenge
Today’s postmodern context presents unique challenges:
- Skepticism toward absolute truth claims
- Emphasis on subjective experience
- Despair over failed promises of modernism
- Rejection of metanarratives
Biblical Response
Scripture provides wisdom for doing theology in any era:
Embrace Humility
“Do not be wise in your own eyes” (Prov 3:7)
“Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge” (Prov 12:1)
We must acknowledge our need for multiple counselors and advisors.
Maintain Clear Essentials
While engaging postmodern audiences, we must still clearly present the crucified and risen Savior and his gift of eternal life as the essential truth. The basic message remains unchanged – salvation through faith in Christ.
Balance Certainty and Mystery
Scripture teaches some things with absolute clarity while other matters require deeper study and reflection. We should be confident about clear biblical teaching while maintaining appropriate humility about complex theological issues.
Community Engagement
American individualism often conflicts with the biblical model of seeking counsel and doing theology in community. We need to recover a more communal approach to theological reflection.
Practical Application
- Present truth with both confidence and humility
- Engage in irenic (peaceable) theological discussion rather than merely polemical (argumentative) debate
- Focus on clearly communicating essential doctrines while allowing room for diversity on secondary issues
- Build relationships and engage in dialogue rather than mere proclamation
The key is maintaining biblical fidelity while engaging our contemporary context with wisdom and grace. This requires understanding both modern and postmodern mindsets while remaining anchored in timeless biblical truth.
Note: Since the 1990s, there has been a development of the concept of “Post Postmodernism”. Definitions vary widely and the concept needs to mature more, but it seems we are in a transition period at the time of the writing of this blog post.
