Should You Reason with a Toddler? A Biblical View on Authority and Training

Modern parenting often advises treating toddlers as miniature rational adults—negotiating compromises, explaining long-term outcomes, and appealing to logic during moments of defiance. Yet Scripture offers a far more realistic view: “Foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child” (Proverbs 22:15). A toddler’s impulsive, developing mind isn’t wired for abstract debate, and attempting to reason with defiance shifts God’s design for family authority into an exhausting negotiation. True biblical training doesn’t mean debating obedience; it means providing clear, calm, and loving boundaries that give little ones the security and direction they truly need.
